Golden Flashes travel to Oswego

The Kent State University Gold Flashes ice hockey team will travel the New York State Thruway for a pair of contests against the Oswego State Lakers this weekend.    In addition to winning an important pair of non-conference victories against the Lakers (3-1-0-1, Kent (3-1-0-0) is looking forward to tying up a few loose ends in their systems one week prior to their initial Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League matchup against Calvin College.

“Our focus is that we are still fine-tuning some things. We are really going to focus on what we can control and hope to put together a full 60 minutes of a hard-working game. We are confident that if we go out there and play hard for 60 minutes and do the things we are working on to get better we should be fine,” declared Kent State University head coach Jim Underwood.

“Every game is important, and this weekend is just as important as next weekend or two months down the road. Given that these are non-league games, we are afforded a bit of an opportunity to try a few things and get some guys out there in different situations.”

Heading into the weekend the Lakers are led offensively by forwards Adam Marvin and Luke Myers. In four games Marvin has amassed eight points (4 G, 4 A) while Myers has earned seven points (2G, 5A) in two games.

The Golden Flashes are coming off a series split-one victory a piece- with the University of Pittsburgh last weekend.

Freshman Justin Bioni continues to make a positive impression as the defenseman picked up a pair of goals during the weekend in which the Moon Township, Pennsylvania native performed near his hometown. Bioni has netted three goals in the early going this season.

“Bioni is making plays early in his career that you would expect to see from a junior or senior defenseman,” observed Underwood. “When we brought him into our program we were expecting a lot of great things from him, but to get it this early on is a tremendous plus for us.”

Kent’s veteran duo of John Buttitta and Sean Moore once again played important roles as each notched four points over the weekend at Pittsburgh.

A notable highlight of the weekend against Pittsburgh was an assist credited to a goaltender.

Golden Flashes sophomore net minder Tyler Geloneck earned the helper on a Moore tally during Kent’s 4-1 victory on Saturday night.

“We work on our goaltenders getting out of their net and playing any puck that is within reason. We have set break out spots and plays that we run and it was a simple case of Tyler getting out of his net, quickly moving the puck up and catching the other team on a line change. We had a quick rush offense and scored a goal. It is good to see those types of plays develop in and early part of the season and take advantages of chances you get,” Underwood said.
