Eight GCHSHL face off in bracket-style tourney

Friday, November 24 – Sunday, November 26 @ Ries Rink, Parma

Shaker Heights used to dominate this bracket tourney, which consists of eight teams from the GCHSHL.  They won six years in a row without losing a game (19-0 from 2010-2015), but the Red Raiders are not here this year.  Avon (2015) and Chagrin Falls (2016) are the last two winners.  Chagrin knocked out Avon last year before defeating host Normandy in the championship game.

PARTICIPANTS (8)

Avon White North
Brecksville White South
Chagrin Falls White South
Lakewood Blue South
Normandy (host) Blue North
North Olmsted Red South
Orange White South
Twinsburg Blue North

KEY PRELIMINARY MATCH-UPS

With the bracket format they use for this tournament, the only match-ups we know for sure are for Friday’s quarterfinals.  Avon-Brecksville is the most intriguing – two White Division teams going up against each other.  The Bees lead the all-time series between the two schools 2-1-0.

FAVORITE(S)

North Olmsted won the Red South and made the Baron Cup final which has to make them the favorite in this field.  Avon won 29 games last year, won the White North and made it to the Baron Cup II final… Chagrin Falls, the defending champion at this event, won 20 games and the White South title a year ago so consider them in the mix as well.  Looking for a dark horse?  It was a long year for Brecksville, but they posted wins over three teams here – including eliminating Normandy in OT in the Brooklyn District tournament.
