League Play the rest of the way for GLHL teams

A winter storm wreaked havoc with the Great Lakes Hockey League schedule last week, canceling a pair of games, but the league points race remains tight as we head into the final two weeks of the OHSAA regular season. All GLHL teams have played the final non-league games on their 2023-24 regular season schedules. Fourteen league games remain – almost half of the total league slate – followed by the Cleveland Cup league championship tournament February 6-10.

University School has six of their league games remaining and will play a GLHL three-in-three schedule both this weekend and next to get their 10 league games in. The Preppers are the only undefeated team remaining in league play and can overtake Gilmour Academy for first place in the GLHL race by sweeping their three games this weekend.

Shaker Heights and Padua Franciscan entered their game on Sunday tied for third place but nothing was settled as the Red Raiders and Bruins played to a 3-3 tie

GLHL TEAM NOTES

GILMOUR ACADEMY – Gilmour Academy defeated #3 St. Edward on Saturday, giving it a winning record (13-12-1) for the first time since starting the season 2-1-0. It has been a long climb back to the right side of .500 for the Lancers, who are on a 9-3-0 run. GA’s 4-0 loss to Toledo St. Francis on Sunday has them back with an even record heading into play this week…Senior forward Colton Fairchild leads Gilmour in goals (10), assists (9) and points (19)…Since the calendar flipped to 2024, freshman goaltender Colton Piercy has stopped 113 of 120 shots for a 1.34 goals-against average and .942 save percentage.

HOLY NAME – Holy Name has a full plate this weekend, taking on the top two teams in the GLHL standings, Gilmour Academy and University School. Both teams are ranked in the Top 10 in the state. The Namers have three wins against varsity competition this season and just one against a team from Ohio – a 9-4 win over Elyria Catholic on December 10 – but were coming off back-to-back wins prior to their 6-0 GLHL loss to Shaker Heights on Saturday…The Namers’ game against Padua last Friday was postponed because of the winter storm and will be made up on Tuesday at 8:00 p.m.

PADUA FRANCISCAN – Padua Franciscan rides a 3-1-1 mark over their last five games into a pair of league games this weekend. The Bruins defeated traditional Toledo-area powerhouse Sylvania Northview, 4-3, in overtime last Saturday before tying Shaker Heights, 3-3, in a league game on Sunday. It is their best stretch of the season outside of a 5-1-0 run in early December. They will take that momentum into key league games against University School and Walsh Jesuit this weekend. A win (or two) could keep Padua in the hunt for a top-two finish in the league, which would earn them a bye past the Cleveland Cup quarterfinals.

SHAKER HEIGHTS – The Red Raiders of Shaker Heights were 7-2-1 between November 26 and December 27 but followed that up with a 1-4-2 streak. The Raiders got things back on the rails by finishing the Meadville MLK tournament with a 7-1 win on January 14, then taking three of four points in league play last weekend with a 6-0 win over Holy Name and a 3-3 tie with Padua.…Following league games this weekend against University School and Walsh Jesuit, Shaker will play Walsh again at Bartley Arena on Tuesday at 6:15 to make up their game that was postponed last Friday.

UNIVERSITY SCHOOL – University School had a 13-game winning streak snapped on Saturday, falling to Saint Ignatius, 1-0. It was just the third loss of the season for the Preppers (23-3-0). Each of the three losses have been by a single goal and included in a total of just five goals against (1.67/game)…US out-scored its opponents 57-14 during the win streak and allowed more than two goals in a game just one time – in their 5-4 win over Saint Ignatius, the #1 ranked team in the state…University School has been ranked #2 behind Saint Ignatius in every weekly OHSAA ranking of the season from MyHockeyRankings…The Preppers have six points in the GLHL standings on the line over a three-day span this weekend, visiting Shaker Heights and Padua Franciscan and hosting Holy Name.

WALSH JESUIT – Walsh Jesuit will play Shaker Heights and Padua this weekend, then visit Shaker for a makeup game on Tuesday…The Warriors are dragging a seven-game losing streak into Saturday’s game at Shaker’s Bartley Arena but have already played a competitive game against the Raiders this season. Walsh fell to Shaker, 5-4, on Boxing Day but held 3-1 and 4-3 leads in that game. Keegan Sprang scored a pair of goals in that one and Nick Vantiegham had a goal and an assist

Great Lakes Hockey League Players of the Week

COOPER PETTIPIECE, GOALTENDER, UNIVERSITY SCHOOL

University School senior goaltender Cooper Pettipiece stopped all 20 shots he faced in the Preppers’ 3-0 win over defending OHSAA champion Olentangy Liberty on Saturday.

“Cooper has risen to the occasion in the big games and that was not more evident than in his shutout this past Saturday against a talented Olentangy Liberty offense.”

The win extended the US winning streak to 13 games and gave Pettipiece a 7-0-1 record on the season with a 1.21 goals-against average and .939 save percentage.

“Cooper has been lights out all year,” said University School head coach Andy Gerow. “We are fortunate to have an incredible group of goalies that have continued to push each other to get better throughout the season.”
