Saint Ignatius will host 8-team bracket in Brooklyn

*** UPDATE: FRIDAY'S QUARTERFINAL GAMES HAVE BEEN POSTPONED***

The inaugural season of the Greater Ohio Hockey League will come to a crescendo this weekend at the Brooklyn Recreation Center as eight of the top programs in Ohio gather together in one place for the league’s first championship tournament. The event will see a total of 12 games played over three days, culminating with Sunday’s 4:00 championship game, the winner of which will claim the Ohio Cup.

Based on this week’s MyHockeyRankings, the GOHL boasts the top five teams in the state and seven of the top nine.

With a full Consolation Bracket in place, all eight teams will play three times over the weekend, supplementing the seven-game regular season slate that saw each member play the others one time.

With the first two quarterfinal games being played Friday night, the advantage of a top-2 seed is only having to play once on Saturday. The 3-6 seeds will have to play quarterfinal games in the morning and semifinal games later in the day.

University School and host Saint Ignatius claimed the top two seeds (and are the top two teams in the state according to MHR). They will play Toledo St. John’s and Gilmour Academy, respectively, in Friday’s matchups.

With this format you absolutely wanted to avoid the 4/5 game, which is not only the tightest match-up on paper but will be played at 8:00am on Saturday. Toledo St. Francis and Olentangy Liberty drew that game, which will be followed by the St. Edward and Upper Arlington quarterfinal at 10:00 am.

Sunday sets up for a nice clean series of four placement games played one after the other (7th, 5th, 3rd, 1st).
