Two-game series at KSU Ice Arena Friday, Saturday

The Kent State University Division 1 ACHA hockey team is hosting the Israel Select team in a two-game series this weekend at the Kent State University Ice Arena.

The series opener is at 7:30 PM on Friday evening followed by a 3:30 Saturday afternoon matinee matchup.

Following the Saturday contest, players from both organizations will participate in a Q & A session with spectators.

According to Shea Spanier, a Kent State Hockey alumni who played in Israel after his senior year with the Golden Flashes, the majority of Israel Select’s roster are players from the Israel Elite Hockey League (IEHL), a summer Pro-Am league.

“My junior year I got my Israel passport,” said Spanier. “Then at the end of my senior year, me and another Kent State player went and played in Israel.”

Former Golden Flash Jacob Friedman will join Spanier while skating for Israel Select.

Established in 2021, the IEHL “allows high-level hockey players to develop their skills, extend their careers, and stay in shape during their individual club off-seasons” their fundraising website proclaims. The site also notes players from the KHL, AHL and ECHL have participated in summer hockey in Israel.

Spanier recently became involved with the league, working to improve the level of professionalism and putting together exhibition games to help raise money.

The weekend series in Kent will serve as a fundraising opportunity for both organizations.
