With Shaker Heights going into quarantine (again), the Great Lakes Hockey League adjusted its post-season tournament schedule for a six-team field and used winning percentage in league games to seed teams for the Cleveland Cup instead of points.
The #2 seed, University School, will now receive a first-round bye along with regular season champion and #1 seed St. Edward. The Preppers earned the second spot with a 2-0 win over Gilmour Academy on Friday, breaking a tie for second place in the final league game to be played this season.
Gilmour will now face Holy Name in a quarterfinal elimination game on Wednesday. The Lancers and Green Wave will face off at 8:00 p.m. following the other quarterfinal match-up between Walsh Jesuit and Padua Franciscan (6:00 p.m. puck drop).
All Cleveland Cup games will be played at OBM Arena in Strongsville.
St. Edward will play the Walsh-Padua winner at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, followed by US taking on team that advances from the GA-Holy Name tilt.
Saturday’s championship game will face off at 8:40 p.m.
It was the first regular season title for St. Edward, which is still hunting for its first Cleveland Cup championship. Gilmour Academy won the tournament in 2020, with a 3-1 win over the Eagles in the championship game to win their second title in three years.
University School is also looking for their first win at the event despite reaching the championship game five times in the first six years of the GLHL’s existence.
