Two AAA Blue Jackets taken in draft for ‘04s

The Youngstown Phantoms added 10 prospects to their reserve list in Phase I of the United States Hockey League Draft Monday.  Right wing Jack Larrigan of the Shattuck St. Mary’s 15s was their first pick – sixth overall.

Larrigan is a 5’9”, 161-pound native of St. Louis and played for the St. Louis Blues Bantam AAA team as well as Christian Brothers high school before joining Shattuck this year.

Larrigan was actually the fourth player taken in the draft as Sioux City (2nd overall) and Muskegon (5th overall) surrendered their first-round picks to sign players to tender agreements ahead of the draft.

There were two other players with Ohio ties drafted by USHL clubs.

Dublin native Nathan McBrayer of the AAA Ohio Blue Jackets 15s went to the Muskegon Lumberjacks in the third round (41st overall).

McBrayer’s teammate, Will Elger of Westerville, was taken by the Tri-City Storm in the ninth round (130th overall).

Phase I of the draft is for “Futures” players only, which are U-17 players for next year’s season (2004 birth year players).

Youngstown went back to the AAA Blues for their next pick as well, grabbing 6’3”, 202-pound forward Tyler Catalano with the 21st overall selection.

Phase II of the draft takes place Tuesday and any player born between 2000 and 2004 not already on a USHL protected list is eligible to be selected.
