MLK Tournaments highlight busy weekend for ranked teams

#2 Upper Arlington (Rasmus Memorial) and #7 Mentor (Pioneer Classic) took home championship hardware over the weekend while #3 Gilmour Academy (St. Andrew’s Tournament) and #4 St. Edward (Meadville MLK) were runners-up in their events.

There could be some room for a new team to slip into the Top 10 this week (Holy Name?) as #9 Sylvania Northview lost twice and #8 St. Charles and #10 Toledo St. Francis were idle.

#1 Saint Ignatius – The Wildcats played and defeated the Pittsburgh Predators AAA team for the fifth time this season on Saturday.  They will be much busier next week as they play five games in three days as the host of the Father Welsh Showcase at Brooklyn Rec. (def. Pittsburgh Predators AAA, 7-1).

#2 Upper Arlington – The Golden Bears swept to victory at the Mark Rasmus Invitational, knocking off #5 Toledo St. John’s along the way and upping their record to 28-0-0 on the year (def. St. Xavier, 10-1; def. Dublin Jerome, 3-1; def. #5 Toledo St. John’s, 4-0; def. Providence (IL), 4-2).

#3 Gilmour Academy – The Lancers fell one win short of capturing the St. Andrew’s Tournament in Ontario for the third straight year, dropping a 5-4 decision to King City (ON) in the championship game (def. Lakefield (ON), 4-2; def. St. Andrew’s, 5-1; def. Korah (ON), 4-2; def. St. Charles (ON), 5-0; lost to King City (ON), 5-4).

#4 St. Edward – The Eagles were also runners-up at an out-of-state tournament, defeating #9 Sylvania Northview in the semifinals before falling to Erie Cathedral Prep in the title game of the Meadville (PA) MLK Tournament (def. New Albany, 4-1; def. Bethel Park (PA), 4-2 def. Meadville (PA), 4-3; def. #9 Sylvania Northview, 4-3; lost to Erie Cathedral Prep (PA), 3-1).

#5 Toledo St. John’s – St. John’s hosted the Ramsus Memorial Tournament.  An otherwise strong weekend for the Titans had a lone blemish – a shutout at the hands of #2 Upper Arlington (def. Dublin Jerome, 6-5; def. St. Xavier, 7-2; lost to #2 Upper Arlington, 4-0; def. University School, 5-2).

#6 Olentangy Liberty – For the second week in a row, the Patriots failed to beat an unranked opponent.  Last week a tie with Thomas Worthington dropped them two slots from #4 to #6.  We’ll see how a 5-3 loss to a quality Holy Name team at the Cleveland Jesuit Classic affects them this week (def. Walsh Jesuit, 4-0; def. Shaker Heights, 6-2; lost to Holy Name, 5-3).

#7 Mentor – The Cardinals kept rolling last week – right through the Pioneer Classic in Columbus, taking the title.  They have now won 13 games in a row.  Their only non-wins this season have been against Shaker Heights (1-0 loss) and Rocky River (5-5 tie).  The Cards have beaten both teams in subsequent meetings (def. Newark Generals, 8-1; def. Olentangy Berlin, 3-1; def. North Royalton, 3-0; def. Olentangy Orange, 5-2).

#8 St. Charles – St. Charles was idle last week.  The Cardinals return to action Friday night against New Albany to kick off a three-in-three weekend.

#8 Sylvania Northview – A loss to #4 St. Edward kept Northview out of the championship game at the Meadville MLK Tournament and will also likely prevent them from moving any higher in this week’s poll.  In their opening game, however, they did beat the Cathedral Prep team that topped Ed’s for the tourney title (def. Erie Cathedral Prep (PA), 4-1; lost to Peter’s Township (PA), 5-2; def. Medina (PA), 4-2; lost to #4 St. Edward, 4-3).

#10 Toledo St. Francis – St. Francis, which returned to the Top 10 last week, scheduled a single out-of-state game in Michigan which was postponed due to a referee scheduling error.
