Mentor, River headline re-aligned top division

The Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League consolidated its Red Division into one group for the 2019-20 season with seven teams that competed in one of its two Red Divisions last season.

North Olmsted and Solon dropped down to the White Division leaving Benedictine, Cleveland Heights, Hudson, Kenston, Mentor, Rocky River and Strongsville in the top flight of Ohio’s largest high school hockey league.

The Mentor Cardinals have the bullseye on their back as the defending Baron Cup champions and can expect stiff competition as they try to repeat.  The Pirates were the team Mentor had to beat in the final to claim the Baron Cup and they are off to a 5-0-1 start to this season.

Kenston came close to knocking out University School in the district tournament last February but has lost their first six games to start the 2019-20 campaign.  They will try to get things on track against the Cardinals at Mentor Civic Arena Friday night.

Cleveland Heights and Hudson held their own in the Red North East last season while Strongsville and Benedictine were around .500 in the Red Central.
