Thanksgiving Tournaments Whet Appetite for GLHL Hockey

Even though the regular season starts earlier now, the Thanksgiving Tournaments are traditionally thought of as the start of high school hockey season.  All seven members of the Great Lakes Hockey League participated in tournaments over the long holiday weekend.

Holy Name swept their three games to win the Walsh Thanksgiving Tournament.  Shaker, University School and host Walsh Jesuit all went 2-1-0.  Padua was 1-2-0, but picked up a big 2-0 win over the Warriors.  Gilmour Academy and St. Edward, meanwhile, competed in the Cold Turkey Shootout in Sylvania.  Both teams posted 3-1-0 marks.

Padua and US did not get enough of tournament play and will hit the road to participate in tourneys this weekend as well.  Padua will be in the Columbus area for the Allgeyer Tournament, University will participate in the National Scholastic Invitational in Jamestown, NY.

Before embarking for update New York, University School will visit Gilmour on Wednesday for the first three GLHL league games to be contested this week.  In other GLHL action, Holy Name will visit Shaker Heights on Friday and host St. Edward on Saturday night.

MALLOY PICKS UP WIN #641—Gilmour Academy head coach John Malloy picked up career win number 641 on Sunday as the Lancers defeated Findlay, 6-3.  With the win, Malloy surpassed Mike Bartley (Shaker Heights) and became the career wins leader among Ohio high school hockey coaches.

“I cannot thank enough all of my assistant coaches, administrators, support staff, parents and of course my players,” said Malloy after the win.  “They have made this journey extra enjoyable and have added meaning.”

Malloy has collected the Ws over a long career that started at Cleveland Heights in 1981-82 and included a two-year stint at Rocky River (1996-1998).

“Win or lose, I traveled with amazing young men and women. I am truly a lucky man,” he said.  “Most importantly I owe my wife Erin, deep gratitude. Her, my son J.T. and daughter Jayne, made each day awesome while encouraging my passion to coach.”

TEAM NOTES

GILMOUR ACADEMY - After a busy weekend at the Cold Turkey Shootout, Gilmour Academy will take it easy with just one mid-week game and the weekend off.  Gilmour will host University School on Wednesday in a key early-season test...Gilmours’s 6-3 win over Findlay on Sunday was OHSAA career win #641 for John Malloy, making him the all-time career leader in wins in Ohio High School hockey.  As the Lancers surrounded him at center ice, Malloy could be heard exclaiming “You guys made it happen.”  Malloy was asked if any of the teams that helped him reach the mark stuck out.  “My parents had nine kids and always made each of us feel like we were their favorite,” he said. “I hope each of my teams feel that way.  Of course, my very first team – 1981-82 Cleveland Heights – has a special place in my heart.  They were a senior-laden team and had no reason to embrace a new young coach, but they gave me a chance. I have been fortunate to have many of them come back and coach with me, or coach their sons, nieces, or nephews.”.

HOLY NAME - Holy Name dropped a 7-1 game at Cathedral Prep (Erie, PA) in Craig Patton’s coaching debut, but bounced back with a 10-0 win over Linsly School (WV) in their next game.  They went on to pick up wins over Meadville, PA (5-3) and Bethel Park, PA (7-1) claim first place in the Walsh Thanksgiving Tournament...The Namers have scored 23 goals over their first four games and senior Brennan Dickey has figured in 70% of them, scoring seven goals and assisting on nine more.  Seniors Milo Henry (5-5-10) and Patrick Ehlert (5-4-9) are also among the league’s top scorers.

PADUA FRANCISCAN - Freshman Aidan Knox stymied the Walsh Jesuit Warriors with a 47-save shutout as the Padua Franciscan Bruins picked up their first win of 2019-20 Friday at the Walsh Thanksgiving Tournament.  Conor Nagle scored both goals in the 2-0 win, which snapped a 10-game (0-9-1) winless streak against the Warriors that included a 6-1 loss in the Season Opener.  The tournament format meant that Knox had to go an extra six minutes to get the clean sheet (17-minute periods)...Padua’s last win over Walsh came in a Cleveland Cup consolation game on February 14, 2015.

ST. EDWARD - Tim Sullivan wasted no time notching his first win as the head coach at his alma mater, St. Edward.  The Eagles’ Season Opener was a 10-0 win over Bowling Green in their first game at the Cold Turkey Shootout in Sylvania on Friday.  St. Edward went on to claim third-place at the tournament.  They dropped a 2-1 decision to St. Francis, but came back with a 3-2 win over the Knights in their re-match in a consolation game...Ethan Payne was between the pipes against Bowling Green and made 13 saves to record the shutout.  Payne, Evan Wrightsman and Nate Cappellazzo have been splitting playing time three ways.

SHAKER HEIGHTS - Shaker Heights claimed three of four possible points in their opening week of league action, following up an exciting 5-4 win over Walsh Jesuit with a scoreless tie with University School.  The Red Raiders scored four times in the opening period against Walsh but squandered the lead.  Logan Mear’s power play goal :49 into the second period gave Shaker a 5-1 lead and held up as the game-winner despite the Warriors rallying to with a goal late...Garrett Ritts made 35 saves—10 of them in overtime—to register a shut out against University School although he failed to pick up the win in the 0-0 tie...not to be out-done by his crease-mate, Maxim Ehlers made 17 of his 34 saves in the third period to preserve a 3-2 win over Bethel Park on Friday.

UNIVERSITY SCHOOL - University School built a 3-0 lead in the first 10:33 of their game against Meadville (PA) on Friday only to see that evaporate into a 6-3 loss.  University out-shot the Bulldogs 24-9 in the third period of that game, but the Meadville goalie stopped every one of them and the Preppers were unable to mount a comeback.  Junior Sam Heller scored twice for the Preppers in that game...Michael Holtz stopped 46 of 48 shots through his first two starts (.958 save percentage) which included a 0-0 tie against Shaker Heights.

WALSH JESUIT - Walsh Jesuit opened the season with league games against Shaker Heights and Padua Franciscan, then faced both teams again at their Thanksgiving Tournament...The Warriors also went up against Linsly School (WV)...Joshua Weiner scored his first varsity goal with 1:33 remaining against Shaker Heights on Sunday, breaking a 1-1 tie and giving the Warriors a win over the Red Raiders at the Thanksgiving Tournament.

THIS WEEK'S LINEUPS

GLHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK: BRENNAN DICKEY, HOLY NAME

Holy Name senior Brennan Dickey was selected as the first Great Lakes Hockey League Player of the Week for the 2019-20 season.

Dickey leads all area players in scoring with 16 points (7-9-16) in just four games played.  He picked up an assist on the only Holy Name goal in their season opener, a 7-1 loss to Cathedral Prep in Erie, then recorded five points in each of the Green Wave’s three games at the Walsh Thanksgiving Tournament.

“Brennan had a great weekend,” said Holy Name head coach Craig Patton.  “He was putting himself in situations where he could help his teammates be successful, but always buried the puck when he needed to.”

Dickey was All-GLHL and Third Team All-Ohio last season.  He was a first-round selection in the NA3HL draft last spring but elected to return to play his senior year at Holy Name instead of joining a Tier III Junior A team in Wyoming.

“He is capable of juggling a lot of different roles for our team, but his leadership in the locker room and at school is really where he makes the most impact,” Patton said.  “I could not be more proud of this young man.”

Dickey was the GLHL Player of the week once last season—for the week ending December 19.

GLHL ALUMNI BIOS: SHAKER HEIGHTS-CINCINNATI CONNECTION

The University of Cincinnati Bearcats, members of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) at the Division II level, have tapped into a pipeline of talent originating in Shaker Heights.

In recent graduates Ben Schneiberg ‘17, Stephen Straffon ‘18 and Britt Anderson ‘19, head coach Matt Bartley’s Red Raiders have provided the UC Bearcats with a steady supply of talent.

“It is pretty cool that they are able to continue to play together,” said Bartley.  “They made it all the way to the semifinals at the ACHA Division II national tournament last season.”

Anderson was not yet on campus for the nationals appearance, but has dressed in 12 of the first 16 games for Cincinnati just a year after leading Shaker Heights in goals (16), assists (17) and points (33) in 30 games played during his senior season.

In addition to the Shaker Heights contingent, the Bearcats roster is heavily fortified with homegrown Ohio talent, including former Great Lakes Hockey Leaguers Logan Rossiter (Walsh Jesuit), Steve LeVasseur (Walsh Jesuit) and Jon Von Keyserling (Saint Ignatius).
