Light Schedule over Holiday Break

This week saw a light schedule due to the holidays and schools on winter break. The Troy Trojans and Hobart Arena held its annual Miami Valley Freeze (MVF) tournament in Troy. This year’s participants were the Beavercreek, Centerville, the Dayton Stealth JV, the Findlay Trojans JV, the Northern Kentucky Norse and the Troy.

The Centerville Elks won all three round-robin games over Dayton 7-1, Northern Kentucky 4-2, and Findlay 6-2 to take the #1 seed into Sunday’s Championship game against Beavercreek. Both teams were depleted with injuries, the Elks played with forwards helping out on the blueline and just nine skaters. The Beavers were down five players as well. The Elks won the game 7-2 taking its first MVF championship. It marks the program’s 47th 1st place tournament trophy. The loss was only the second loss of the season for a Beavercreek team that is playing well all year. Northern Kentucky came in third followed by Troy, Findlay and Dayton.

In Cincinnati, teams participated in Elder’s Oblinger Tournament. St Xavier won the tournament going 3-0-1, their only blemish was a 3-3 tie with Northern Kentucky. Wins over Talawanda, Elder and LaSalle were all shutouts. Talawanda took second, winning 3 games and losing to St Xavier by a score of 6-0. Elder won one game and lost three while LaSalle went 0-4.

The two week break was not kind to Springboro. The Panthers started out with a 9-0 loss to Dublin Jerome before playing in the Warrior Shootout at Kent State during the break. The Panthers fell to host Walsh Jesuit, Dublin Jerome and Northview. The Panthers returned home on Saturday to play Olentangy Liberty and took a tough 9-1 loss. The Panthers visited Dublin Scioto on Sunday and came away with a 12-3 win to round out a five day, five game stretch. Springboro is 3-4-1 in the Capital Hockey Conference White Division.

Meanwhile Moeller was busy as well. The Crusaders played 5 games over the break. On December 22nd, the Crusaders visited New Albany at the Easton Chiller and won convincingly 7-2. On Sunday the 23rd, Moeller visited Olentangy Orange at Chiller North and again made a statement in the CHC winning 9-1. Great goal tending and aggressive fore-checking were the keys to both victories. On Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th, the Crusaders dropped back to back games by scores of 2-1 to Anthony Wayne and New Albany. The Crusaders rounded out the weekend with an 8-3 win over Perrysburg on Sunday. Moeller is currently 4-1-0 in the Capital Hockey Conference Red Division.
