Red Raiders open Padua Tournament with win

A second period power play goal by Shaker Heights junior forward Logan Mears held up as the game-winner as the Red Raiders protected a one-goal lead for the final 20:14 of the game and picked up a 2-1 win over the Findlay Trojans.

After a scoreless first period, the Trojans scored in the first minute of the second period to break the ice.  Senior Jackson Schmits scored at the :43 mark of the second frame but that would be all that Findlay could get past Shaker’s sophomore goaltender Maxim Ehlers.

Ehlers made 26 saves in the game – including all nine shots he faced in the third period – to preserve the tournament-opening win for the Red Raiders.

Findlay netminder Blaize Cain, a junior, turned in an impressive performance himself, making 34 saves in the game.  Shaker Heights peppered the Findlay net with 17 shots in the second period.

James Hubbard was the other goal-scorer for Shaker Heights.

Findlay (0-1-0/1 point) will go up against Holy Name at 9:10 a.m. tomorrow while Shaker Heights (1-0-0/4.0 points) will face Toledo St. John’s at 11:20 a.m.
