St. Ed’s scores three times in third for 4-1 win over Liberty

Olentangy Liberty netminder Andrew Vidrick stopped 26 of 27 shots through two periods to keep the Patriots even with St. Edward, but the Eagles scored three unanswered goals in the third period for a 4-1 win at the Padua Holiday Hockey Tournament Friday night.

Tyler Budzar gave St. Edward a 2-1 lead with 9:22 left and Ryan Willse twisted the knife when he scored to give the Eagles a two-goal lead with just 2:25 remaining.

Liberty pulled Vidrick, who finished the game with 38 saves, but Sean Kolenich salted the game away for Ed’s with an empty-netter in the final minute.

Nate Cappellazzo made 18 saves for St. Edward, kicking out all seven shots he faced in the third period to keep the Patriots from coming back.

Ben Brown scored the Liberty goal in the second period.

Olentangy Liberty (0-1-0/1.0 point) returns to action against tournament host Padua Franciscan at 7:20 a.m. Saturday.  Next up for St. Edward (1-0-0/4.0 points) is a 7:40 a.m. tilt with St. Charles.
