Tries out for Mentor Ice Breakers

The big ice at Mentor Civic Arena's west rink is familiar territory for Justin Vance.

He played there for Lake Catholic, is now the Cougars' coach there and has logged minutes beyond estimation in adult hockey leagues there since.

But this past weekend, it wasn't about coaching or a recreation league this time for Vance.

It was about pursuing his own hockey dream.

As the expansion Mentor Ice Breakers held their tryout camp for their inaugural Federal Hockey League campaign beginning Oct. 27, Vance was one of 42 skaters and 10 defensemen trying to make the roster.

At 31 years old, Vance is among the oldest players in camp, a group that includes players from the United States, Canada, Russia, Ireland and Denmark.
