Bowling Green High School’s most decorated athletic program will not field a team this season.
Due to low player turnout the Bobcats will not field a hockey team for the first time since the Ohio High School Athletic Association recognized ice hockey as a varsity sport in 1978.
Bowling Green had just eight players fully committed to playing this season, and the maximum number that would have played was 12, according the head coach Eddie Powers.
“Throughout youth hockey, this age group has always battled having a team, and that was even including kids from outside of Bowling Green. … We had seasons where we didn’t have teams. Now that has transferred here,” Powers said.
“To say that it doesn’t hurt deeply, you can’t imagine how bad I feel. I’ve spent over half of my life with the Bobcat program.”
