New Bench Boss Played Pivotal Role on 2009 State Champs

University School Press Release:

After conducting a national search, University School has selected Andy Gerow ’10 to serve as the hockey program’s next varsity coach.

Mr. Gerow served as captain of the US hockey team during his senior season, and he played a pivotal role on the 2009 State Championship team. Upon graduating from US, Mr. Gerow attended The Ohio State University where he earned his bachelor of science degree in education, and he later earned his master's degree in sports and recreation management from Kent State University.

Mr. Gerow served as the junior varsity head coach at US for two seasons prior to moving to Chicago, IL, in 2016. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Mr. Gerow will work full-time at the Upper School within the Athletic Department.

The University School Athletic Department extends its sincere thanks to the Search Committee: Ben Malbasa ’96, varsity football coach and English teacher; Leslie Muha, K-8 professional school counselor and US hockey parent; David Neundorfer ’99, former US hockey captain; John Ptacek, varsity soccer coach and Upper School athletic director; and Christina Townsend-Hartz, director of admission and financial aid. All were impressed with Mr. Gerow and his vision for the US hockey program, his strong communication skills, and his tireless work ethic.

Mr. Gerow made a strong impression on the 2018-19 team captains on his visit to campus, as well, and the boys are excited to get on the ice with him.

Soon, Mr. Gerow will schedule a meeting at the Hunting Valley Campus to meet with US Hockey players and parents.
