Saint Ignatius (19-5-3) vs. St. Edward (26-5-3)

Ancient rivals, ranked 1-2 in the entire state, meet again with a trip to Columbus on the line. Saint Ignatius and St. Edward have earned a combined 33 regional and 18 state titles all time. This will be the eighth straight state tournament where one of the two schools has represented the Brooklyn Region and the 13th of the last 14 (Rocky River in 2013).

No team has won more state titles than the Eagles (11), but they have not won it all since 2008 – the longest championship drought in school history. Saint Ignatius, meanwhile, has won it all six times since then, claiming five of the last seven titles (including a shared title with Northview in 2014).

The Wildcats were also ranked #1 in the state and one of four teams about to board the bus to Columbus when the 2020 tournament was cancelled with the arrival of COVID-19.

Saint Ignatius defeated St. Edward in both of their regular season meetings this year but both games were close, and the Eagles are 20-1-2 against teams other than the Wildcats since their loss to them on December 11. The lone loss in that stretch came at the hands of Upper Arlington at the Padua Holiday Tournament.

Throw the records out the window and buckle up…

Puck drop is 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 5 at Brooklyn Recreation Center.
