Padua, GA, Walsh in the way of St. Edward title defense

The second week of February. Across Ohio teams are facing off in their league tournaments and the Great Lakes Hockey League is no different. The eighth annual Cleveland Cup will be contested at OBM Arena in Strongsville between Tuesday and Saturday.

St. Edward went undefeated in league play (10-0-0) and, as such, has earned a bye past the first round of playoff games. The Eagles are attempting to become the first team to repeat as GLHL tournament champions since Saint Ignatius (2014-2017; see below for a full list of past winners).

Two of the three quarterfinal games went to sudden-death with Padua and Shaker going to double-overtime before Shane Helman won it for the Bruins.

Padua will now face St. Edward Friday at 6:00 p.m. while Gilmour Academy will face Walsh Jesuit in the other semifinal after the Warriors defeated University School - also in overtime - on a Ryan Kerscher goal and 40 saves on 41 shots from Tavian Parks.

Gilmour advanced by defeating Holy Name - which they had just faced in their regular season finale.

NOTE: District playoff brackets are out. See the front page of Ohio Hockey Digest for links to all league and district brackets and follow all of the OHSAA post-season action on our high school scoreboard.

GREAT LAKES HOCKEY LEAGUE - TEAM NOTES

GILMOUR ACADEMY LANCERS (20-9-3, 7-2-1)

A 6-1 loss to St. Edward at Winterhurst on Friday was just the third loss Gilmour Academy has suffered since December 28 (13-3-0) and the first by more than a single goal…Senior forward Aidan Priestley picked up four assists and senior goaltender Ian Anderson recorded his fourth shutout in a 7-0 win over Holy Name in the regular season finale…Kyle Laws (2-2-4) and Matthew Bauman (1-3-4) led the way in the QF win over the Namers...The Lancers enter the post-season ranked #5 in the state...KENT DISTRICT: GA will face #17 seed Mayfield Friday, February 18 at 6pm.  They are on the same side of the bracket as Walsh Jesuit and GCHSHL Red Division regular season champion Hudson.

HOLY NAME GREEN WAVE (2-24-1, 0-9-1 GLHL)

Holy Name had a great opportunity to scout their first-round opponent up close and personal when they concluded their regular season schedule at Gilmour Academy on Sunday…Junior forward Nolan Patton led the Green Wave in assists (9), points (14) and penalty minutes (25)…Both Holy Name goalies finished in the top five in the league in saves (Mathias Sizov 423, 3rd; Pete Rose 365, 5th)...BROOKLYN DISTRICT: The Namers open district play against #18 seed Bay on Tuesday, February 15 at 5:15 p.m. The winner of that game goes up against #1 seed Saint Ignatius.

PADUA FRANCISCAN BRUINS (11-11-6, 3-6-1 GLHL)

The record down the stretch (0-6-1) may not look great for Padua Franciscan, but five of those six losses were by a single goal. If the Bruins are to reverse their slide they will need the likes of All-League selections Shane Helman (23-13-36) and Brock Bisler (11-16-27) to come through as well as assist leader Liam Conway (12-19-31). Padua has gotten reliable goaltending from Aidan Knox all season and he played well enough to win over that season-ending stretch, allowing just 10 goals in five starts…Shane Helman collected four points (2-2-4) including the game-winning goal in the 2OT quarterfinal win over Shaker...BROOKLYN DISTRICT: The Bruins do not play their first district playoff game until Sunday, February 20 when they will take on the winner of Avon-North Olmsted. They are on the #3 seed and sit on the same side of the bracket as #2 seed St. Edward.

SHAKER HEIGHTS RED RAIDERS (15-12-4, 5-4-1 GLHL)

Shaker Heights heads into the post-season with wins in each of its last three games and four of its last five…The Red Raiders have already played Padua four times this season but not since January 2…Shaker is looking for their first-ever win in the Cleveland Cup tournament. It suffered first-round losses in 2019 and 2020 and had to withdraw due to COVID a year ago…Garrett Ritts has allowed more than two goals just once in his last six starts…The Raiders have lost back-to-back games just once since the calendar turned to 2022 (January 7 & 8 against Gilmour Academy & Sylvania Northview)...Tyler Lencewicz raised his league-leading totals with two goals and an assist in the Cleveland Cup game against Padua. He is up to 39-23-62 in 30 games heading into district play...KENT DISTRICT: Shaker is seeded #3 in the Kent bracket. It will play with winner of Cleveland Heights-Chagrin Falls on Sunday, February 20. The Raiders are on the same side of the bracket as #2 seed US and GCHSHL power Mentor.

ST. EDWARD EAGLES (21-5-4, 10-0-0)

A perfect 10-0-0 record in the league makes St. Edward the Cleveland Cup favorite as it tries to defend its 2021 title – the first in school history. St. Edward now has a 23-1-1 record in league play over the past three seasons. The Eagles have not lost a GLHL regular season game since January 11, 2020 against Gilmour Academy (5-1). Gilmour is also the only team to beat St. Edward in the Cleveland Cup since 2019…League MVP Jack Mansour finished the regular season third in the league in scoring (22-18-40 in all games)…Over his last nine starts, Second-Team All-League goaltender Ethan Payne allowed more than one goal just twice and posted four shutouts...BROOKLYN DISTRICT: The Eagles are the #2 seed behind traditional rival Saint Ignatius. St. Edward, which is on the same side of the bracket as Padua and Rocky River, will not play until Sunday, February 20 when they take on the Westlake-Lakewood winner.

UNIVERSITY SCHOOL PREPPERS (16-12-2, 6-4-0 GLHL)

No team has played in the Cleveland Cup championship game more than University School (5), but the Preppers are still looking for their first title…University School enters the post-season on a four-game winning streak that included a 6-1 win over the Cleveland Cup Quarterfinal opponent Walsh Jesuit…Every US loss this season has been part of a losing streak of three or more games...KENT DISTRICT: The #2 seed in the Kent bracket, US draws the winner of CVCA-Canfield as its first opponent on Saturday, February 19. The Preppers are on the same side of the bracket as Shaker and Mentor.

WALSH JESUIT WARRIORS (14-13-2, 3-7-0 GLHL)

Josh Weiner’s seven-point effort against Holy Name on Friday lifted him into second-place in the GLHL scoring race with 47 points (17-40-47). His 30 assists lead the league. Noah Colasanti’s two goals in that same game gave him 20 on the season. It was his ninth multi-point game of the campaign...The Warriors should enter the post-season with some confidence after winning their first district championship a year ago...KENT DISTRICT: First things first for the Warriors, obviously, as they pursue their first Cleveland Cup championship but the district draw sees them up against NDCL on Saturday, February 19. Their second game could very well be against Hudson - the first-place team from the GCHSHL Red Division.
