Award recognizes character, excellence, a love for the game and sportsmanship

We are all familiar with the Hobey Baker Award and what it stands for. Not only does it recognize the top player in college hockey it promotes the values that Hobey Baker himself personified: character, excellence, a love for the game and sportsmanship.

The Hobey Baker High School Character Award was created in 2003 with the belief that character makes the game better and it makes players better. It honors high school hockey players who exemplify the Hobey Baker ideal that “Character Builds Excellence.”

Candidates for a High School Hobey Baker Award are selected by their coaches, based on the following criteria:

  • Coachability
  • Strength of character
  • Integrity
  • Commitment
  • Teamwork
  • Community leadership
  • Outstanding sportsmanship

Each year, a single senior hockey player from each participating OHSAA team is selected by his or her coach to be honored by teammates and celebrated by the school and the community for outstanding individual performance on and off the ice.

All high school coaches are encouraged to click on the banner below to learn more, and also please listen to Episode 69 of the Ohio Hockey Digest On Air podcast. We were joined by Jon Doehr, chairman of the Awards and Rules Committee for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award, to learn more about this great award!
