MLK Tournaments provide last tune-up before GLHL stretch drive

All seven members of the Great Lakes Hockey League play in tournaments over the MLK Weekend – one last weekend of in-season tournament hockey before the final three weeks of the regular season are spent playing almost exclusively in league play.

There is one league game on the docket: St. Edward will host Shaker Heights Wednesday at Winterhurst. The Eagles defeated University School twice last week to take over sole possession of first place in the league standings at 4-0-0. St. Edward is the only GLHL team without a loss in league play this season.

The Eagles and Preppers are the only two members of the league that will be hitting the road for tournaments this weekend. St. Edward heads east to Meadville (PA) while US heads west to Sylvania for the Mark Rasmus Invitational.

The other five GLHL teams will all stay here in Northeast Ohio. Gilmour Academy will play in the Father Styles Showcase while the other four will all compete in Walsh Jesuit's 2022 Jesuit Classic.

WALSH HOSTS 2022 JESUIT CLASSIC – Walsh Jesuit assembled a competitive eight-team field for this year’s Jesuit Classic which will be contested over the MLK Weekend. The event is a bracketed competition like Shaker’s Thornton Park Tournament. Teams need to win their opening games on Saturday to remain in the hunt for the championship while the losers will be channeled into the Consolation Bracket.

GLHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK (WEEK OF JAN. 3)

MATT BAUMAN, GILMOUR ACADEMY

Matt Bauman returned to the Gilmour lineup and scored a natural hat trick in the first period to spark the Lancers to a 6-0 win over Shaker Heights on Friday.

Bauman added another goal in Sunday’s 4-2 win over Padua.

“We have missed his talent,” said Gilmour head coach John Malloy.

Bauman debuted for the Varsity A Lancers as a freshman in the semifinals of the 2020 Cleveland Cup. In the first period of his second varsity game, he scored a goal as Gilmour won the championship with a 3-1 win over St. Edward.

He spent last season with Gilmour’s 16U AAA team, scoring 21 goals and 33 points in 47 games played.

PREVIOUS WINNERS – Josh Weiner, Walsh Jesuit (Week of Nov. 22); Mark Berglund, University School (Nov. 29); Shane Helman, Padua Franciscan (Dec. 6); Tyler Lencewicz, Shaker Heights (Dec. 13); Geoffrey Lapsevich (Dec. 20); Noah Colasanti, Walsh Jesuit (Dec. 27)

GREAT LAKES HOCKEY LEAGUE - TEAM NOTES

GILMOUR ACADEMY LANCERS (11-7-3, 3-1-1)

Gilmour Academy collected six points in the Great Lakes League standings in a span of three days, defeating Shaker Heights, Walsh Jesuit and Padua Franciscan…The Lancers will take part in the Father Styles MLK Showcase over the weekend, playing four different teams, including a pair of Columbus-area teams ranked in the Top 10 in the state: St. Charles Prep and Upper Arlington…GA has scored 15 of their 33 goals (45.5%) in the first period this season…Gilmour’s schedule will not let up the following weekend as the Lancers scheduled Saint Ignatius next Saturday, sandwiched between league games against Walsh Jesuit and University School.

HOLY NAME GREEN WAVE (2-13-0, 0-1-0 GLHL)

Holy Name defeated Normandy of the Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League in overtime to advance to the championship game of the inaugural Great Lakes Conference Tournament last week. Rocky River defeated the Green Wave to take the GLC title, but Holy Name gets another shot at the Pirates Wednesday evening in the quarterfinals of the 2022 Jesuit Classic. The Namers will face either Walsh Jesuit or Olentangy Liberty (ranked #8 in the state) in their second game of that tournament.

PADUA FRANCISCAN BRUINS (11-5-4, 3-2-0 GLHL)

Padua Franciscan’s 3-1 victory over Walsh Jesuit on Friday was the third league win for the Bruins and moved them into second place in the league standings. A visit to Gilmour Academy on Sunday gave Padua an opportunity to solidify that position, but they fell to the Lancers, 4-2…Padua has scored 18 goals in the first period and 22 in the second but, in the third period the Bruins ramp it up. They have scored 34 third period goals in 20 games…The Bruins will attempt to play their way into the Championship Bracket at the Jesuit Classic Saturday by beating the hard-charging Findlay Trojans.

SHAKER HEIGHTS RED RAIDERS (9-8-4, 1-2-1 GLHL)

The Shaker Heights Red Raiders are one of four GLHL teams playing in Walsh’s Jesuit Classic. They face off with one of the top teams in the state this season – the Bowling Green Bobcats in the first game. BG is ranked in the Top 10 in this week's rankings while the Raiders held steady at #14...Shaker Heights is entering a tough stretch in their schedule as they try to move up in the GLHL standings. After a league game at St. Edward Wednesday, and the Jesuit Classic this weekend, Shaker’s next three games are league contests against University School, St. Edward and Gilmour Academy.

ST. EDWARD EAGLES (12-4-2, 4-0-0)

A pair of wins over University School vaulted St. Edward into sole possession of first place in the GLHL standings. Wednesday’s tilt with Shaker Heights provides the Eagles with an opportunity to open up a four-point lead on Gilmour and Padua at the mid-point of their 10-game league schedule…The Eagles are in first place in the GLHL but have been slow starters with just 12 first period goals in 18 games this season…St. Edward will fine-tune their game at the Meadville (PA) MLK Tournament before returning home to try to close out a league regular season title down the stretch.

UNIVERSITY SCHOOL PREPPERS (9-8-1, 2-2-0 GLHL)

Back-to-back losses to St. Edward means University School has lost six of its last seven games. The Preppers look to generate some momentum for the stretch drive of the GLHL season this weekend with a trip to Sylvania for the Mark Rasmus Invitational Tournament…Starting goaltender Evan Crawford has a solid .893 save percentage over his past five starts, but he has received a total of four goals in offensive support in that span…Colin Counahan is the leader in the GLHL Cy Young race this season with (a team-leading) 12 goals and one assist.

WALSH JESUIT WARRIORS (9-8-2, 0-3-0 GLHL)

Walsh Jesuit are winners of eight of their last 11 overall (8-3-0), but suffered a pair of losses in league play last weekend to drop to 0-3-0 in the GLHL…Joe Holzter scored the only goal for the Warriors last weekend, notching his 11th of the season against Padua on Friday. It was his first goal since scoring a pair December 17 against Medina. If Holtzer – who scored eight goals in the first nine games of the season – can heat up down the stretch, it would certainly help the Warriors…Walsh is the host team for the 2022 Jesuit Classic, but they sure didn’t give themselves an easy ticket into the championship bracket, drawing #8 Olentangy Liberty in the first round…Josh Weiner is third in the league with 30 points and is tied for the league lead with 18 assists.
