Thornton Park Tournament highlights upcoming slate of games

Ohio high school hockey is still in early-season tournament mode but one weekday tilt between SOM Center Road rivals Gilmour Academy and University School highlights another busy week for teams in the Great Lakes Hockey League.

The Lancers and Preppers meet for the first of two league games, and three scheduled regular season meeting overall, Tuesday at Gilmour Ice Arena (4:10 pm puck drop). The two teams met four times last season with three of the games decided by one goal, the other decided by two, and each team winning twice.

In their most recent meeting, Gilmour eliminated University School in the semifinals of the 2021 Cleveland Cup, 1-0 in overtime. Conner Underwood scored the only goal of the game in sudden-death and Dylan Stefan stopped 23 shots for the shutout.

SHAKER HOSTS THORNTON PARK TOURNAMENT – Shaker’s Thornton Park Tournament welcomes a competitive field again this year. The tournament’s unique bracketed format has each team play three games in a single-elimination and consolation bracket format that will end up with four placement games on Sunday.

The host Red Raiders will open against Hudson Thursday night and hope to play their way into the winner’s bracket. GLHL members Walsh Jesuit and Padua Franciscan will also compete in the tournament.

GREAT LAKES HOCKEY LEAGUE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

JOSH WEINER, WALSH JESUIT (WEEK OF NOV. 22)

Josh Weiner excelled at the Walsh Thanksgiving Tournament, scoring four goals and assisting on four others in three games at the event. For his efforts he was named the Great Lakes Hockey League Player of the Week for the week beginning Nov. 22.

The highlight of his weekend was sinking a hole-in-one at Portage Country Club on the morning of Friday, Nov. 26, then scoring twice and picking up a pair of assists in a 6-1 win over Holy Name that evening.

The junior forward leads the Warriors with 10 points (5-5-10) in seven games this season. He also led the team in scoring a year ago with 15-16-31 in 27 games as Walsh won their first-ever district championship.

MARK BERGLUND, UNIVERSITY SCHOOL (WEEK OF NOV. 29)

Senior forward Mark Berglund scored six goals in the three games University School played at the National Invitational Scholastic Showcase in Jamestown, NY.

Berglund, who leads the Preppers and is second in the GLHL with nine goals on the season, got stronger as the showcase progressed, scoring a goal against Bethel Park (PA) in the first game, notching a pair in Game #2 against Upper St. Clair (PA) and capping off the weekend with a hat trick against St. Joseph’s (NY).

GREAT LAKES HOCKEY LEAGUE - TEAM NOTES

GILMOUR ACADEMY LANCERS (2-3-2, 0-0-0)

Gilmour Academy will face University School for a league game at home on Tuesday and then be in Indiana for the Cornfield Cup over the weekend. Last weekend, the Lancers hosted some elite out-of-state competition from New Trier (IL) and lost both games - the second in overtime - to put their record at 2-3-2 on the season, but they have a chance to go 1-0-0 in league play with a win over the rival Preppers...GA has shown an ability to play and win low-scoring games, but will be looking to get their offense warmed up against US. The Lancers have scored just seven goals in their first seven games. No player has scored more than once and senior defenseman Connor Underwood leads the team with three points (1-2-3).

HOLY NAME GREEN WAVE (0-5-0, 0-0-0)

Holy Name's game against Padua Franciscan at OBM Arena in Strongsville Friday night has been postponed. When the game, which was to be the GLHL Opener for each school, is rescheduled the Green Wave will be looking for a better result than their first meeting with the Bruins; a 7-1 loss at the Walsh Thanksgiving Tournament. The Namers have had trouble generating offense this season but scored a season-high four goals in their last game against Hudson.

PADUA FRANCISCAN BRUINS (6-1-1, 0-0-0)

The Padua Bruins scored five or more goals in every game of a six-game win streak that came to an end on Sunday. Padua lit the lamp 40 times during the six-game stretch, running their record to 6-0-1 on the season, before a 7-1 loss to Olentangy Berlin – one of the top teams in the Columbus District this season…Junior forward Shane Helman notched back-to-back hat tricks against Dublin Coffman and Dublin Jerome at the Allgeyer Tournament giving him 11 goals on the season. Liam Conway (6-8-14) and Brock Bisler (2-8-10) are right behind him on the Bruins scoring chart…Padua will play just a single game this week against Holy Name before hosting the prestigious Padua Holiday Hockey Tournament December 17-19 with a dozen of the top teams from around the state converging on OBM Arena.

SHAKER HEIGHTS RED RAIDERS (3-2-1, 0-1-0)

The Shaker Heights Red Raiders ran their winning streak to three with a 7-5 win over visiting Toledo St. John’s Sunday at Thornton Park. Shaker closed out the Walsh Thanksgiving Tournament with wins over Hudson (8-2) and Cincinnati Moeller (6-2) and has scored 26 goals over the last four games. Senior forward Tyler Lencewicz has led the way, putting the puck in the net 12 times over the first half-dozen games of the season to lead the league in both goals and points (19). Lencewicz is coming off a prolific season with the Team Ohio 18Us, where he put up a team-leading 56 points (24-32-56) in 32 games for TO’s state championship entry.

ST. EDWARD EAGLES (4-2-2, 1-0-0)

St. Edward lost two of three games at the National Invitational Scholastic Showcase in Jamestown, NY but were playing shorthanded for most of the weekend. The Eagles dressed only 11 skaters in their 5-0 loss to North Allegheny (PA) on Friday as six seniors were in Columbus to watch the football team (which includes another three of head coach Tim Sullivan’s skaters) claim the state championship. The Eagles will be back at full strength when they visit rival Saint Ignatius Saturday at Brooklyn. They also host Toledo St. John’s Friday night at Winterhurst. St. Edward will be looking to win back-to-back games for the first time this season.

UNIVERSITY SCHOOL PREPPERS (3-5-0, 1-0-0)

A 3-1 loss to Bethel Park (PA) in the opening game of the National Invitational Scholastic Showcase ran University School’s losing streak to five but the Preppers got things on track by beating Upper St. Clair (PA) and St. Joseph’s (NY) before returning from the event in Jamestown, NY. The schedule doesn’t get any easier for US as they visit Gilmour Academy for a league game Tuesday and visit Saint Ignatius at OBM Arena on Friday…Senior forward Mark Berglund leads the team with nine goals – five more than #2 scorer Colin Counahan. Between the two of them, Berglund and Counahan have accounted for 13 of the 20 goals US has scored on the campaign (65%)…Goaltending statistics coming out of early-season tournaments can be spotty, but Preppers target Evan Crawford has been solid with a 2.28 goals-against average and .928 save percentage in 276 reported minutes played.

WALSH JESUIT WARRIORS (1-5-2, 0-1-0)

A familiar trend is repeating itself at Walsh Jesuit as the Warriors are struggling with a lot of close losses early in the season. Walsh carries a 1-5-2 mark into this week but, in addition to the two ties, three of the five losses have been by one or two goals. The team suffered three losses in as many days on a trip to the Toledo area over the weekend, but the games were all close (Findlay, 3-2; Bowling Green, 4-2; Perrysburg 4-3). Bowling Green and Findlay are ranked #6 and #8 in the state by www.myhockeyrankings.com...The Warriors have scored more than three goals in a game just once this season – their 6-1 win over Holy Name on November 26. Josh Weiner (5-5-10), Joe Holtzer (5-3-8) and Noah Colasanti (3-3-6) will either need to take their production up a notch or get some secondary scoring from further down the lineup…The goaltending duo of Zach Firment and Brodie Lerch has become a trio with the emergence of Tavian Parks (2.26/.905).
