In a one-sided game, the St. Edward Eagles defeated the Avon Eagles by a score of 10-0.  St. Edward came into Saturday’s district semifinal having outscored their past two opponents 21-0.  On the other hand, Avon came off their third straight overtime playoff win.  As the #7 seed, Avon defeated Benedictine and Amherst to earn their first ever district semifinal berth.

Avon’s noteworthy playoff run fell short on Saturday.  In the first period alone, St. Edward scored three goals.  At 1:57, senior Lucas Newton started off the scoring with the assist coming from Jack O’Sullivan.  The next two goals came at 4:24 and 10:06.

“We were a little sloppy in the first period,” St. Edward head coach Tim Sullivan said despite the 3-0 lead. “But we fine-tuned some things up and had a good second period.”

Indeed, the St. Edward Eagles had a much better second period.  Within the first minute of the period, Newton capitalized again with the assist coming from Ryan Dunn.  The Eagles then rattled off four goals in a span of 6:04 to put the game out of reach.

By the beginning of the third period, the score read eight goals for St. Edward, and 0 for Avon.  Per OHSAA’s “mercy” rule, the game ended immediately after the 10th goal.

Between the pipes, St. Edward goalkeeper Ethan Payne saved a total of 9 shots, while Avon goalkeeper Ben Boka stopped a total of 39 shots.

Newton and junior Atticus Durst both tallied hat tricks.  When asked about his spectacular performance, Newton emphasized, “It’s not all about how I play, it’s about how the team plays.  I’m just trying to help the team out as much as I can.”

“Good players rise at good times,” Sullivan said of Newton’s performance. “And he did a heck of a job today with that”.

St. Edward advances to the Brooklyn West District Final on Saturday, March 6th, in which they will face off against the Rocky River Pirates, who are coming off a fresh district semifinal win against St. Ignatius.
