Davis stops 45 of 46 shots as Cardinals advance

In a low-scoring affair between two gritty teams, Mentor walked away victorious in a 2-1 double-overtime nail-biter over Gilmour Academy. The District Semifinal between the two teams started fairly slow, with a 0-0 score at the end of the first period.  Mentor goalkeeper Garrett Davis made 12 key saves in the first period to keep the game scoreless.

In the second period, Mentor found a way to put themselves on the scoreboard first.  At 7:08, Andrew McBride shot a laser top-right into the goal, with the assist coming from Jack Geduldig.  Mentor head coach Paul McKito said, “We found a way to be opportunistic.”  Considering their shot total, the Cardinals were very opportunistic by scoring first.

Despite Mentor drawing first blood, the Gilmour Academy Lancers answered in the third period at 11:52.  Zach Mangel capitalized on a loose puck in front of the Mentor goal.  Almost 40 seconds later, Gilmour had to kill a power play in order to keep the game tied, 1-1.

In the first overtime period, Gilmour goalkeeper Andrew Harrington made four saves, while Mentor goalkeeper Garrett Davis recorded eight saves.  What looked like a game that could have gone into 4-5 overtimes ended in the second overtime period at 5:51. McBride scored the game-winner for the Cardinals skating through the neutral zone and taking the puck to the net for an unassisted goal.

Overall, Harrington recorded 20 saves, while Davis tallied 45.  Davis had an amazing performance, always staying composed in front of the net.  Coach McKito of Mentor said, “What can I say about Garrett?  He rose to the occasion.”  Davis truly did rise to the occasion, as he made many important saves in Mentor’s upset victory.

When asked about the game, Davis said, “This is motivation for us, because they were ranked #1 and we were #5.  We came in as the underdogs.  I think beating them like that really gave us the motivation going into Friday night next week.”

Mentor will take on Walsh Jesuit in the Brooklyn East District Final on March 5th at 7:00 p.m.
