Six with Ohio ties selected in 2020 NAHL Entry Draft

The Tier II North American Hockey League held their 2020 Entry Draft Tuesday and there were some players with Ohio connections selected, including the fifth and sixth overall picks.

Bradley Marek of the USHL’s Youngstown Phantoms was selected with the #5 overall pick by the Springfield Jr. Blues.  Marek, 6’2” and 225 pounds, has played two and-a-half seasons of Tier I Junior hockey in the USHL and is listed as a 2020-21 Michigan State recruit.

The Corpus Christi IceRays picked next and took Powell, OH native Spencer Cox sixth overall.  Cox, a 2001-born defenseman, played at Culver Academy the last four seasons but, prior to that, was a part of the AAA Ohio Blue Jackets organization.

Winger Dominic Schimizzi of Gilmour Academy Prep was taken by the Johnstown Tomahawks in the second round – 49th overall. Schimizzi was productive offensively (24-25-49 in 48 games) despite spending 116 minutes in the penalty box.

In the seventh round, former Cleveland Barons goaltender Parker Rey was selected by the Kenai River (AK) Black Bears.  The well-travelled Rey is a Michigan native that played for the Swan Valley Stampeders in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League and the Battlefords North Stars of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League during the past season.

Also in the seventh round, forward Taurin Haddon-Harris of the Gilmour Academy Prep team was selected by the Shreveport Mudbugs. Haddon-Harris, from Boca Raton, FL, was third on the Lancers in scoring this past season, putting up 50 points (23-27-50) in 50 games and racking up 99 penalty minutes.

A third Lancer, center Rocco Testa-Basi, was selected by the New Jersey Titans in Round 14. Testa-Basi put up 47 points (21-26-47) in his first 30 games with the prep team at Gilmour before heading to Ontario where he finished off the season playing Junior A hockey in Collingwood.
