Drive for Five is still alive for Saint Ignatius

We are down to the final eight teams in what was a 73-team single-elimination post-season tournament for the sport of ice hockey under the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA).

The question on everybody’s mind is whether or not Saint Ignatius can emerge from the Brooklyn District and win the state title for a fifth consecutive season, extending their own state record.  The Wildcats have been state champions five times over the last six years – a stretch that includes a shared title with Sylvania District finalist Sylvania Northview in 2014 following a championship game that was declared a tie after seven overtimes.

Two teams remain in each of four districts.  The Brooklyn and Sylvania brackets include four traditional powers with 54 combined district titles and 21 state championships between them.  The other four teams, playing out of Kent and Columbus, can claim just five district titles and zero state championships.  Two of those four teams have never made it past this point in the post-season.

This is not the time of year for looking past your team’s next game but, for those of you who are looking down the road, the state semifinals this year (March 14 at Nationwide Arena) will pit the Brooklyn and Kent winners against each other in one game while the Columbus and Sylvania winners will meet to decide the other state finalist.  So, it is possible to get two traditional powers in the championship game, two teams that have never won before, or some combination.

The state championship game will be played at noon on Saturday, March 15 at Nationwide Arena.
