Ignatius drops two more; St. Charles ties undefeated #2 UA

There were more upsets - and near upsets - of Top 10 teams this week setting the stage for possible movement, and maybe a new team or two, in tomorrow's poll.

#1 Saint Ignatius – A week after suffering their first loss of the season, top-ranked Saint Ignatius dropped two more games over the weekend, allowing 12 goals in the process.  Detroit Catholic Central is the #1 Division I team in Michigan, and Brother Rice is the #2 Division II team, so voters will surely take that into consideration, but it will be interesting to see how many – if any – ding the Wildcats this week (lost to Detroit Catholic Central (MI), 7-2; lost to Brother Rice (MI), 5-2).

#2 Upper Arlington – The Golden Bears are still the only undefeated team in the state, but they had a very close call in their lone game of the weekend.  UA, which has had a pair of close (2-goal) wins over the previous two weeks was tied by a surging St. Charles Cardinal team.  As a result, the Bears have looked a little more beatable as the Blue Jackets Cup approaches (tied #8 St. Charles, 3-3).

#3 Gilmour Academy – Gilmour bounced back from their 2-2 tie with #4 St. Edward the week prior and out-scored a pair of GLHL rivals by a combined 17-3 to move into a tie with the Eagles for first place in the league standings and take control of their own destiny for the #1 seed in the upcoming Cleveland Cup (def. #10 Holy Name, 6-2; def. Padua, 11-1).

#4 St. Edward – The Eagles cancelled a scheduled trip to Windsor, ON to play A21 Academy and, instead, had a week to rest up for their regular season finale and the upcoming post-season tournaments.

#5 Mentor – A week after moving up in the poll to #5, Mentor suffered a 4-3 loss to rival Shaker Heights.  Both of the Cardinals’ losses this season have come to the Red Raiders by a single goal (lost to Shaker Heights, 4-3; def. Strongsville, 4-1).

#5 Toledo St. John’s – The Titans lost two of three games at the Hoosier Cup – all against teams from out of state, so it is hard to say how this should affect their ranking, but with a 4-6-0 mark in their last 10 games they are not going to be moving up (lost to Edina (MN), 6-1; lost to New Trier (IL), 13-1; def. Lake Central (IN), 6-0).

#6 Olentangy Liberty – The Patriots returned from a bye week and failed to beat unranked New Albany in their lone game over the weekend.  Liberty has not won since their 6-2 win over Shaker Heights on January 18 and will need to be on their toes as they go up against #8 St. Charles on Saturday (tied New Albany, 2-2).

#8 St. Charles – St. Charles is heating up, moving up a spot last week and tying #2 Upper Arlington in a big CHC Red Division match-up on Friday night.  The Cardinals are 6-2-1 over their last nine games heading into their big tilt with Liberty (tied #2 Upper Arlington, 3-3).

#9 Sylvania Northview – Northview won their sixth league game in a row, defeating rival St. Francis on Friday.  The Wildcats are trending up, but it would be hard to see them leap-frogging St. Charles coming off the Cards’ impressive tie against UA (def. Toledo St. Francis, 6-3).

#10 Holy Name – Holy Name followed up their 6-2 loss to #3 Gilmour on Tuesday with another setback against unranked Walsh Jesuit that will likely drop them out of the Top 10 this week and also hurt their seeding for the upcoming Cleveland Cup (lost to #3 Gilmour Academy, 6-2; lost to Walsh Jesuit, 2-1).

Knocking on the door:  If the Namers do in fact drop out of the poll this week, it will open up at least one spot for a new team to pop onto the radar of voters.  A few possibilities:

Shaker Heights – The Red Raiders beat #5 Mentor for the second time this season and have four additional wins over ranked, or previously ranked, teams (Holy Name, St. Francis, Northview and University School)

New Albany – The last two weekends, New Albany has defeated #8 St. Charles and tied #7 Olentangy Liberty.  They also have a resume-building wins over Liberty and Findlay from earlier in the season.

Rocky River – It remains to be seen if many voters would make room for two GCHSHL teams in the Top 10 but, for those that do, the Pirates are the top challengers to Mentor in the Red Division and are rated #10 in Ohio by www.myhockeyrankings.com.

Anthony Wayne – Nine wins in the last 10 games for the Generals – included in that stretch are Ws over Shaker Heights and Findlay.
