GCHSHL shows well at MLK tournaments

Mentor (25-1-1; 9-0-0) – Mentor took home yet another tournament win, going 4-0 last weekend in the Pioneer Classic. The Cardinals defeated Newark, Olentangy Berlin, North Royalton, and Olentangy Orange. Mentor will get back into league play as they take on Cleveland Heights (1/24) before winding down the regular season in early February.  Mentor remains #7 this week in the Ohio High School Hockey Coach’s Poll.  Their only loss this season was to Shaker Heights by a score of 1-0.

Rocky River (15-6-3; 5-1-0) – Rocky River went 1-1-1 in the Cleveland Jesuit Classic over the weekend (defeated Holy Name, loss to Walsh Jesuit, and tied Upper St. Clair (PA)) and followed that up with a victory over Kenston. The Pirates are 6-1-1 over their last eight games following their 3-1 win over Kenston at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse on Wednesday. River will take on Strongsville (1/24) and Hudson (1/25) this weekend.

Strongsville (15-9-1; 4-3-1) – The Mustangs had a good showing at the Ehrnfelt Memorial tournament, going 3-1; defeating Cleveland Heights, Beavercreek, and Harborcreek (PA). Strongsville is 9-2-0 over their last three tournaments, including winning the title at the Heights Holiday Tournament.  Strongsville will face off against Rocky River (1/24) and Benedictine (1/25) this coming weekend.

Hudson (13-10-1; 3-4-1) –The Explorers went 3-1 over the past weekend in the Pioneer Classic, defeating Canton-Akron, Talawanda, and Newark. Hudson has allowed just five goals over their last five games.  They won four of those games – including a 3-2 win over Shaker Heights (1/12). The Explorers will take on Rocky River (1/25) and Cleveland Heights (1/26).

Cleveland Heights (7-16-0; 1-4-0) – Cleveland Heights had a tough go at it during Ehrnfelt Memorial tournament, the Tigers went 1-3 last weekend. They did bounce back with a 5-1 victory over Orange in a non-league game yesterday. Cleveland Heights will remain busy this weekend with games against Mentor (1/24), Kenston (1/25), and Hudson (1/26).

Benedictine (8-10-0; 1-5-0) – Benedictine has been off since their loss to Mentor last week. The Bengals will square off against Kenston (1/24) and Strongsville (1/25) this coming weekend as they try to reverse a three-game losing streak in league play.

Kenston (9-16-0; 1-7-0) – Kenston participated in the Rock & Roll Cup last weekend going 1-3. The Bombers also dropped one to Rocky River on Wednesday – their fifth loss in the last six games. This weekend Kenston will take on Benedictine (1/24) and Cleveland Heights (1/25).
