Mentor reaches 20-1-1

Nothing should change in the top three this week.  Saint Ignatius and Upper Arlington remain undefeated and Gilmour Academy reinforced their #3 ranking with a decisive win over the #5 team.

#4 Olentangy Liberty, however, was unable to defeat a CHC White Division opponent, creating a bit of a drop-off after the top three teams.

It just so happens that Ignatius (Brooklyn), UA (Columbus) and GA (Kent) all play out of different districts which could put them on a path to meet up at the state tournament.

Looking to the northwest part of the state, Toledo St. Francis dropped out of the Top 10 last week, but a 4-3 win over #6 St. John’s on Saturday might be their ticket back into the rankings.  We’ll find out tomorrow night.

#1 Saint Ignatius – The top-ranked Wildcats kept rolling, winning four games in two days at a tournament in Ontario (def. Le Sommet (ON), 5-3; def. Blythe Academy (ON), 6-2; def. Ottawa Valley Wolves U18 (ON), 6-1; def. Northern Pre-University Rebels (ON), 6-1).

#2 Upper Arlington – Three more wins for the Golden Bears, who out-scored the competition by an aggregate 19-5 score with two of the three wins coming over New Albany (def. New Albany, 7-2; def. Olentangy Orange, 7-2; def. New Albany, 5-1).

#3 Gilmour Academy – The Lancers played just one game, but posted an impressive win over #5 St. Edward, no doubt cementing them at #3 (def. St. Edward, 5-1).

#4 Olentangy Liberty – When is a tie a loss?  When you are ranked #4 in the state and are tied by a White Division team.  The Patriots won their next game, but that was not all that convincing either.  They will likely get dinged in the ranking this week. (tied Thomas Worthington, 2-2; def. St. Xavier, 6-4).

#5 St. Edward – The Eagles scored seven times in a league win over #10 US on Friday but could not get it done against Gilmour (def. University School, 7-3; lost to Gilmour Academy, 5-1).

#6 Toledo St. John’s – Two losses, one to an out-of-state opponent and one to a cross-town rival, will surely cost the Titans some votes/points, but can they stay ahead of Mentor? (lost to Livonia-Churchill, 6-3; lost to Toledo St. Francis, 4-3).

#7 Mentor – Two more convincing wins in the GCHSHL Red Division runs Mentor’s record to 20-1-1.  Their only loss of the season was 1-0 at the hands of Shaker Heights.  With the three teams directly ahead of them in these rankings having mixed results last week, the Cards should get a bump up the list (def. Benedictine, 8-1; def. Kenston, 6-2)

#8t Sylvania Northview – Northview has won six of their last eight games with both of the losses in that span coming by a single goal (def. Anthony Wayne, 11-3).

#8t St. Charles – The Cardinals travelled to Indiana to face Culver Academy and split a pair of games against a quality opponent (lost to Culver Academy, 5-3; def. Culver Academy, 3-1).

#10 University School – The Preppers, clinging to their position in the Top 10, lost on Friday to Ed’s but salvaged their weekend by picking up a pair of points in the GLHL standings with a 4-3 overtime win over Holy Name on Sunday (lost to St. Edward, 7-3; def. Holy Name 4-3 in OT).
