Gilmour coach passes Shaker's Bartley for Ohio record

Gilmour Academy head coach John Malloy picked up career win number 641 on Sunday as the Lancers defeated Findlay, 6-3.  With the win, Malloy surpassed former Shaker Heights head coach Mike Bartley and became the career wins leader among Ohio high school hockey coaches.

“I cannot thank enough all of my assistant coaches, administrators, support staff, parents and of course my players,” said Malloy after the win.  “They have made this journey extra enjoyable and have added meaning.”

Malloy has collected the wins over a long career that started at Cleveland Heights in 1981-82 and included a two-year stint at Rocky River (1996-1998).

“Win or lose, I traveled with amazing young men and women. I am truly a lucky man,” he said.  “Most importantly I owe my wife Erin, deep gratitude. Her, my son J.T. and daughter Jayne, made each day awesome while encouraging my passion to coach.”

As the Lancers surrounded him at center ice, Malloy could be heard exclaiming “You guys made it happen.”

Malloy was asked if any of the teams that helped him reach the mark stuck out.  “My parents had nine kids and always made each of us feel like we were their favorite,” he said. “I hope each of my teams feel that way.  Of course, my very first team – 1981-82 Cleveland Heights – has a special place in my heart.  They were a senior-laden team and had no reason to embrace a new young coach, but they gave me a chance. I have been fortunate to have many of them come back and coach with me, or coach their sons, nieces, or nephews.”

Malloy (641) and Mike Bartley (640) are the only members of Ohio’s 600-win club.  Jim Cooper (Sylvania Northview/585), Doug Hauser (Parma/561) and Bob Whidden (St. Edward/507) are the only other coaches in Ohio history to surpass 500 wins.
