Perrysburg, Anthony Wayne take next step

In the interview process to become Perrysburg’s new hockey coach in 2017, Kevin Fisher did not mince words with his vision for the program.

As part of a portfolio that he presented, Fisher said he wanted Perrysburg — in its relative infancy as a varsity team — to move to the Red Division of the Northwest Hockey Conference, home of the top hockey schools in the area such as Northview, St. John’s Jesuit, and St. Francis de Sales.

Fisher’s pitch had the administration’s attention.

“One of the things that stood out right away was that he had us moving from the White Division to the Red Division, and when you’re building a program, it’s a pretty lofty goal,” Perrysburg athletic director Chuck Jaco said. “But that’s where he wanted to be within two to three years within his arrival.”

Fisher’s point was this: If the Yellow Jackets wanted to build their hockey program as a legitimate varsity entity, the next logical step was to play a schedule filled with the best competition in the area, and in many years, the state.

For this coming season, Fisher’s goal for Perrysburg will be the program’s reality.
