CANFIELD CARDINALS

The Cardinals are heading South for 2019-20 season.  Canfield suffered a hard-fought loss 2-1 to Aurora in the Season and league Opener on November 23.  It was Canfield’s first league game in the White South Division of the GCHSHL after a one-year stint in the White North last season.

The Cardinals were unable to defend their title at the Bruce Anderson Tournament over the Thanksgiving weekend, but they did win two of their three games, handily defeating both Oregon Clay and Twinsburg by identical 10-0 counts.  Canfield then picked up its third shutout of the young season with a 4-0 blanking of Westlake on Sunday afternoon, but it is 0-2-0 in league play.

Last season, Canfield finished with a winning record (11-10-2) and placed third in the White North.  This season, the Cardinals will be coached by Steve Covelli. It is Covelli’s first season as the Cardinals’ head coach.  Team captains Brian Woak, Tyler Christie and Joey Dapolito will help with the transition.

The Cards will have their gloves full with a very competitive White South Division slate of games with nine returning skaters and one goalie.  They welcome nine new players and a second goalie.

Covelli is very encouraged from what he saw in his netminders and will be depending on his defense to lead the way.  With only four players currently on defense, the Cardinals will have to find a way to keep the players fresh and will be relying on the forwards to help out, back check and support the D.

The new coach says he is looking forward to the season – particularly games against CVCA and Orange.
