Holy Name’s Sabastino Layne scored 22 seconds after the opening faceoff, and built a 2-0 first period lead over Toledo St. Francis, but the defending state finalists found their game and came back for a 6-3 win in the final game of the 2017 Padua Holiday Hockey Tournament for both teams.
It was a penalty-filled affair, with the two teams combining for 78 minutes in penalties.
While the Green Wave got off to a quick start in the first period, it was St. Francis that would come out firing in the second period, scoring three goals in a span of 32 seconds all in the first 1:22 of the period. Nick Daly, Matthew Snyder and Drew Caster scored in rapid succession to give the Knights a 4-2 lead. Ben Mitchell added a shorthanded marker later in the period to give St. Francis a three-goal lead heading into the third.
Layne and Daly scored their second goals of the game for their respective teams in the third period for the 6-3 final.
Toledo St. Francis netminder Jacob Coward rebounded from a shaky start, making 26 saves. Ross Conforto made 21 stops for Holy Name.
