Wildcats win state championship re-match, clinch division

Saint Ignatius goaltender Benny Savarino sparked the Wildcats to a 6-1 win over Toledo St. Francis in a re-match of last year’s state championship game, as well as the 2016 Padua Tournament.  The win ensured that Saint Ignatius will get a chance to defend their tournament title in Sunday’s championship game where they will face Sylvania Northview.

The Wildcats were out-shot, 16-7, in the opening period, but Savarino stopped everything the Knights threw at him in the opening frame, allowing Saint Ignatius to take an early lead that they would never relinquish.

Savarino finished the game with 29 saves on 30 shots, allowing only a second period goal to Ben Mitchell.

Ignatius peppered the St. Francis net with 43 shots, out-shooting the Knights, 36-14, over the final two periods after Savarino helped them weather the storm early.

Alex Bilardo scored the first and last goals for Saint Ignatius and Michael Boehm had a goal and two assists.

Jacob Coward made 32 saves for St. Francis before leaving the game in the third period.
